Ranching Killer Zombie Robots -- Part I: Definitions

There have been a few interesting threads on sakai-dev recently; today's post is an email I sent responding to a thread about establishing a "Sakai code convention".... (Sorry, I had to turn off anonymous comments after a recent upgrade broke the captcha module.)

Coding Standards for Sakai?

Does vendorware have its place? Absolutely. Does open source or community source software have its place? Absolutely.

MooseTrout has consciously chosen to develop and support open/community source software for ten years because:

  1. it is often highly customizable to better meet local needs
  2. open source is good for quality control, and makes for easier judgements about product security
  3. open source projects are good focal points around which to build community
  4. choosing open or community source products usually builds local technical expertise that empowers an organization to have spin-off benefits from their investment

MooseTrout's philosophy can be summarized as follows:

  1. open really is best
  2. software that's easy to use
